Medical Oncology

Medical oncologists are doctors who specialize in treating cancer with medications such as chemotherapy. The Blessing Cancer Center provides you with advanced and targeted treatments. Learn more about medical oncology.

The physicians that provide care at the Cancer Center prepare and prescribe medications and therapies tailored specifically to each cancer. Your options for medical treatments for cancer include:

  • Chemotherapy: Powerful chemicals target cancer cells.

  • Immunotherapy: For some cancers, we can stimulate your own immune system to target cancer cells.

  • Access to clinical trials: If the cancer doesn’t respond to current treatments, we partner with other medical facilities to enroll you in a clinical trial of a new or innovative treatment. To learn more about clinical trials please click on the links below:

Radiation Oncology

Radiation oncologists are doctors who specialize in using radiation therapy, such as X-rays, to treat cancer. Learn more about radiation oncology.

We use the latest equipment to target tumors and avoid damaging healthy tissue. Our radiation treatments for cancer include:

  • External beam radiation: We target tumors with powerful beams of radiation. Learn more about external beam radiation.

  • Intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT): This latest evolution in radiation technology allows us to use 3-D imaging to direct specific doses of radiation to specific places in the tumor. Learn more about IMRT.

  • Brachytherapy: We place tiny amounts of radioactive material in or near the tumor or in the surrounding tissue. Read about brachytherapy.

Surgery

We treat many types of cancer by surgically removing the tumor or tumors. For some cancers, surgery may be the only treatment you need. For others, we may combine surgery with additional cancer treatments such as radiation therapy and/or chemotherapy.

Our specialist surgeons treat many different cancers including:

Infusion Center

In the Blessing Infusion Center, you can relax in luxurious recliners while we replenish the fluids your body needs or infuse prescribed medications. We give you these solutions through a vein (intravenously) using a needle or catheter.

Some infusions take as little as 20 minutes while others can take hours. Learn more about our infusion center. Our specially trained infusion nurses provide treatments including:

  • Blood products: Certain treatments and conditions can lower your red blood cell or platelet levels. Red blood cells carry oxygen to the rest of your body. Platelets help your blood clot. You may need a blood or platelet transfusion to keep these cell counts within normal ranges.

  • Antibiotics: We can infuse systemic antibiotics to help you fight an infection.

  • Fluids: If you become dehydrated, we can restore your fluids with solutions that include the right balance of electrolytes. Electrolytes are chemicals, such as sodium and potassium, that help keep you hydrated and maintain normal blood pressure when they are in balance. You can lose electrolytes through sweating or blood loss.

  • Chemotherapy: If chemotherapy is part of your treatment plan, you may receive your medications through infusion.

Appearance Center

When you look better, you feel better about yourself. Beauty experts volunteer their time with people who have cancer to help enhance their self-image during treatment. Our Look Good Feel Better program provides:

  • Wigs and scarves: If you experience temporary hair loss, our volunteers will help you choose the wig or scarf to complement your look.

  • Beauty tips: We offer beauty consultations free of charge.
