Experience the Blessing Difference: Brain and Spine Surgery

Our talented surgical teams use advanced technology to perform complex brain and spine surgeries safely and effectively. You can rely on our neurosurgery teams because we offer:

  • Advanced technology: Our StealthStation® surgical navigation system is the latest in imaging technology. It allows us to view the surgical site, in your spine or brain, in high-definition, 3-D images in real time from multiple angles. 3-D imaging provides more precise details than traditional 2-D images, which allows us to provide safer, more effective treatment. During brain surgery, the technology allows us to view structures of the brain. This imaging helps us avoid damage to healthy brain tissue and target tumors or lesions with pinpoint accuracy.

  • Rigorous, ongoing training: Our neurosurgical teams, from the technicians who scrub us in to the neurosurgeons and nurses, all receive continuing education in neurosurgery. Educating our clinical staff in the latest surgical techniques and innovations is part of our commitment to providing the best care possible for our community.

  • Teamwork: Our neurosurgeons work closely with specialists from many fields. For brain and spine tumors, we work with medical and radiation oncologists (cancer specialists) to develop a treatment plan tailored to you. For spine and brain injuries, we coordinate your care with top rehabilitation specialists.

  • Patient safety: We do everything we can to make your surgery safe and your recovery as quick and painless as possible. That’s why we are a proud member of the American College of Surgeons’ National Surgical Quality Improvement Program® (ACS NSQIP) and the Illinois Surgical Quality Improvement Collaborative (ISQIC). These programs analyze our surgical data to ensure that we continue to provide the best surgical care possible.

  • Grade A hospital: Blessing earned its second consecutive grade A for hospital safety from the Leapfrog Group. This organization analyzes safety data from hospitals across the country and compares outcomes. You know you are in safe hands at a top-rated hospital.

Neurosurgery at Blessing

Our neurosurgeons have the training, skills and advanced surgical equipment to perform a comprehensive range of neurologic surgeries. Surgeries we perform include:

  • Tumor removal: Many brain and spine tumors are not cancerous and grow slowly. If they press on nearby brain or spine tissue, you may need surgery to remove the tumor before permanent damage occurs. Our advanced imaging systems allow us to remove these tumors while avoiding the healthy nearby tissue.

  • Spine fusion: Injuries or degenerative processes may cause your vertebrae (bones of the spine) to slip on each other. This movement can cause pinched nerves or abnormal spine motion, which can lead to pain, numbness and weakness. In some cases, we may perform surgery to relieve pressure on nerve roots and stabilize (fuse) the spine to provide relief. Our surgeons are experts in all forms of spinal fusion, which is surgery that uses bone grafts to permanently join vertebrae.

  • Carpal tunnel relief: The nerves controlling feeling and movement in your fingers pass through a narrow opening, the carpal tunnel, in the wrist. If this tunnel becomes too narrow through injury or inflammation, it can press on the nerves and make your hand feel numb. If left untreated, carpal tunnel syndrome can cause permanent nerve damage. Our surgeons can widen the carpal tunnel and relieve pressure on the nerves.

  • Brain trauma: For people who experience a traumatic brain injury, our neurosurgeons can operate to treat the injury. We perform procedures to relieve pressure on the brain or remove blood clots that could cause permanent damage.
