A patient in crisis found an advocate in Alexis Grootens, RN, Blessing Hospital Emergency Center. For that, Alexis earned Blessing’s 115th DAISY award. The DAISY award recognizes extraordinary nurses who make a difference in the lives of people by the work they do every day.

The nomination came from one of Alexis’s coworkers who was sitting with the young patient. The coworker described the patient as being in a vulnerable state, going through a lot and came to the ER for help. The nomination went on to say:

“Alexis advocated for this patient and stood up for her. When arguments persisted, Alexis asked visitors involved to leave to improve the environment of the patient’s care.

The patient then asked for food, but since the cafeteria was closed, the best I could offer were sandwiches and small items from the department refrigerator. But Alexis went above and beyond and ordered the patient McDonalds chicken nuggets since the patient was a picky eater.

The patient had previously had their phone calls recorded, so Alexis offered the patient her phone so she could call her parents.

This is more than just providing exceptional care. This patient was having a rough time, and Alexis was kind, sensitive, and supportive. In my opinion, Alexis went above and beyond in ways that she didn't have to, to improve this patient’s experience. Alexis is incredibly kind and compassionate in her job, and it showed through her sympathy for this patient.”

DAISY stands for “Diseases Attacking the Immune System.” The family of a 33-year-old man, who died of an immune system disorder, began the program in 1999 to honor his memory. More than 5,400 healthcare providers and nursing education programs worldwide participate in the DAISY Award program.

Patients and their family members, visitors, doctors, hospital staff members or volunteers may recognize the extraordinary care provided by nurses through a DAISY award nomination. Click here for a nomination form.
