A family member of one of Dr. Luc Tchapnda’s patients called health system administration to comment on the care he provided. That phone call led to the family medicine physician receiving the ICARE award for Compassion on March 3.
Blessing Health System employees nominate coworkers for an ICARE Award based on the nominee’s demonstration of one of the organization’s values - integrity, compassion, accountability, respect or excellence (ICARE) – or all five values.
The nomination of Dr. Luc, submitted by the health system’s Patient Experience team, stated in part: “The patient’s aunt took the time to personally call our Administration office to share her gratitude and admiration for his care. She described the experience as one of the most compassionate and thorough medical interactions she had ever witnessed. Dr. Luc’s demeanor conveyed empathy, respect, and a deep commitment to the well-being of both the patient and their loved ones.
She emphasized how Dr. Luc’s ability to listen deeply, explain complex information clearly, and offer genuine emotional support made the family feel respected, reassured, and truly cared for. Her words reflected not only appreciation but a sense of awe at the level of attentiveness and empathy Dr. Luc demonstrated. She also noted that his presence brought calm and clarity during a difficult time, and that his approach exemplified the kind of care for which every patient and family hopes.
This interaction is a powerful example of what patient-centered care looks like in action. Dr. Luc not only demonstrated clinical excellence but also embodied the values of dignity, empathy, and partnership that define outstanding healthcare.
