For more than three decades, Michelle Schaefer has been a steady, compassionate presence for patients and teammates alike. That dedication has earned her Blessing Health System’s ICARE Award for Excellence.

A medical assistant in Radiation Oncology, Michelle is often the first point of contact for patients beginning their cancer journey. Her nomination notes that she is considerate and respectful in every aspect of her role, setting a caring and professional tone at a time when reassurance matters most.

Michelle’s excellence is also reflected in the expertise she brings to her role. Described as “a wealth of knowledge,” coworkers routinely turn to her for answers and guidance. Behind the scenes, she navigates cancer care policies, veteran authorizations, and insurance requirements. It’s work that frequently results in much-welcomed financial relief for patients, easing stress so they are better able to focus on healing.

Her patient-first mindset carries over into every aspect of care coordination. Michelle carefully schedules tests and appointments to limit unnecessary trips and time in the hospital, understanding that when fighting such a detrimental disease, time is a valuable and precious resource. That trait was highlighted in her nomination, noting that many often “ask for Michelle, because they know Michelle will get done what is needed in a timely fashion.”

Beyond her clinical responsibilities, Michelle contributes to unit-based projects, including dedicating significant time to maintaining the patient garden near the Medical Oncology department. Her efforts help maintain a space that brings comfort and beauty to patients, families, and staff alike.

Michelle’s impact is felt daily by those she serves. Blessing Health System proudly congratulates Michelle Schaefer on receiving the ICARE Award for Excellence and thanks her for consistently setting a standard of care that truly embodies what it means to be exceptional.
