For many people, having a talk with an elderly loved one about the possibility of their needing nursing home care can be difficult. The family of one Blessing Hospital patient found expert help in Marie Mohr, RN.
Marie, a member of the Inpatient Care Coordination team, was recently presented with Blessing’s 114th DAISY award. The DAISY award recognizes extraordinary nurses who make a difference in the lives of people by the work they do every day.
The nomination of Marie read, in part: “Mom was brought back to the Emergency Center to be evaluated. We knew that she was unable to care for herself at that time. We spoke with Marie and told her we wanted to start getting Mom's name on waiting lists for nursing homes for when the time would come that she may not be able to return to her own home. This was such a hard thing to think about and also a hard thing to speak to our Mom about because Mom has always been so strong, independent, and a wonderful caregiver to her family.
Marie came into the room, sat down next to Mom, and introduced herself. After they spoke briefly, Marie asked Mom some questions regarding whether she thought she could care for herself if she went home, and Mom told her no. Marie had the nursing home conversation with Mom and explained everything in such a way that Mom understood that we kids only wanted what was best for her safety.
If you knew my Mom, you would understand that a nursing home was out of the question before she met Marie. Marie just had such a great way with her words, and Mom could tell that Marie was genuinely concerned, along with the rest of us. Marie gained my Mom's trust in that one conversation.
Marie Mohr is a fantastic nurse and genuinely cares about her patients and their families. Thank you, Marie, from the bottom of our hearts.”
DAISY stands for “Diseases Attacking the Immune System.” The family of a 33-year-old man, who died of an immune system disorder, began the program in 1999 to honor his memory. More than 5,400 healthcare providers and nursing education programs worldwide participate in the DAISY Award program.
