Stormy Leazer, RN, and a patient she cared for believed a higher power brought them together. This exceptional bond led to Stormy receiving Blessing’s 118th DAISY award during a presentation on February 16. The DAISY award recognizes extraordinary nurses around the world who make a difference in the lives of people by the work they do every day.

Stormy Leazer has received the 118th Blessing DAISY award

Stormy is a member of the Radiology Vascular Access team who met the patient in the Cardiovascular Unit. The patient’s niece nominated Stormy, sharing the following observations:

“My dad spoke about a nurse named Stormy during my aunt's initial visit to Blessing, while I was in Florida. He told me my aunt was calmed by Stormy’s presence.

But I didn't know how much Stormy was a comfort to my aunt until I saw it for myself in the room. Stormy walked in, hugged my aunt, sat on the edge of the bed, and held her hand to talk to her.

I remember my aunt telling Stormy, before her discharge to go home on palliative/hospice care, ‘You are an angel, Stormy. I know God picked you for a reason to care for me.’ Stormy responded that she was so grateful that God had chosen her to be there for her. They hugged, and we all shed tears at goodbye,” the nomination concluded.

Thank you, Stormy, for the true human connection you formed with this patient and the impression you made on her family.

DAISY stands for “Diseases Attacking the Immune System.” The family of a 33-year-old man, who died of an immune system disorder, began the program in 1999 to honor his memory. More than 5,400 healthcare providers and nursing education programs worldwide participate in the DAISY Award program.

Patients and their family members, visitors, doctors, hospital staff members or volunteers may recognize the extraordinary care provided by nurses through a DAISY award nomination. Click here for a nomination form.
