Derek Wells’ commitment to the success of every one of his Emergency Medical Services (EMS) students recently earned him the ICARE Award for Compassion.

Blessing Health employees nominate their peers for ICARE awards based on their demonstration of any one – or all – of the Blessing Values of Integrity, Compassion, Accountability, Respect and Excellence.

Derek is the Blessing Hospital EMS department Education Coordinator. The nomination from coworker Michael McCarter stated, in part:

“One of the key things Derek does to push students to success is that he offers a level of one-on-one coaching and remediation that is practically unheard of in the EMS world. He has created customized learning programs that require Derek to expend a great deal of additional time and energy pushing and working with our struggling students to give them the absolute best chance at success.

Derek never reduces the quality or difficulty of the course work - instead he works with struggling students to get them to the level of actual performance needed for success. I have seen this occur with at least three students that have all gone on to pass the class and two of which are now serving the same community that Blessing serves, as capable, qualified, and competent EMS providers.

Derek never gives up on struggling students and in doing so he bolsters the reputation of Blessing Health System and our EMS programs throughout the community. His efforts have also helped our greater community by turning struggling students into strong EMS providers that we can all count on in an emergency.

His willingness to go above and beyond, his compassion for these students and his drive to see them succeed without lowering standards is uncommon and well worth recognizing.”
