Obesity: The Disease

Morbid obesity is a major health problem in our country that affects close to 64 million adults and takes the lives of over 400,000 patients per year. Obesity is a growing epidemic not only in the United States but in the world. This disease shortens the length and quality of life. The average morbidly obese person lives anywhere from 22 years less than a person of normal weight. It is the #1 contributor to diseases that take over our lives, such as diabetes, heart disease, lung disease, liver disease, and more.

Obese patients come with guilt as if it is a gluttonous problem and they are responsible for their weight. At Blessing Bariatric Institute, we focus on educating the patient on their disease in addition to providing treatment.

Treatment

The goal of treatment is to reduce the load on the patient’s metabolism. This decreases the risk for excess weight related diseases and increases the quality of life. Once a patient has reached a certain point in being overweight, surgery is the only treatment that actually works long term.

Blessing Bariatric Institute offers a comprehensive program with follow up for a lifetime. This includes education, medicine, and choosing one of three different procedures based on the patient and their specific needs.

The bariatric team includes a nutritionist, social worker, physical therapist, nurse practitioner, and surgeons. Together, we will create a program that will help assure our patients that they are making informed decisions about their surgical options. Support groups are an integral part of our program and provide our patients with the support they need before, during, and after their treatment. Moreover, we are committed to helping our patients make the lifestyle changes necessary to produce healthier and happier lives.
