  • Rigorous, ongoing training: Our surgical teams, from the surgical scrub technicians to the surgeons and nurses, all receive continuing education. Educating our clinical staff in the latest surgical techniques and innovations is part of our commitment to providing high-quality care for our community.

  • Patient safety: We do everything we can to make your surgery safe and your recovery as quick and painless as possible. That’s why we are a proud member of the American College of Surgeons’ National Surgical Quality Improvement Program® (ACS NSQIP) and the Illinois Surgical Quality Improvement Collaborative (ISQIC). These programs analyze our surgical data to ensure that we continue to provide the best surgical care possible.

  • Grade A hospital: Blessing earned its sixth consecutive grade A for hospital safety from the Leapfrog Group. This organization analyzes safety data from hospitals across the country and compares outcomes. You know you are in safe hands at a top-rated hospital.

What Is General Surgery?

Our general surgeons have specialized training in a range of complex surgical techniques. Some surgeries we perform include:

  • Cancer surgery: Our experienced surgeons perform several types of surgery to treat cancers of the breasts, digestive system, organs and many others. Read more about the cancers we treat.

  • Abdominal and bowel surgery: We perform surgeries to treat conditions affecting organs including the appendix, bowel, stomach or intestines.

  • Biopsy: If we detect abnormal tissue, a general surgeon may remove a small sample of this tissue to test it for cancer.

  • Hernia repair: A hernia is a hole or tear through which an organ slips out of place and into another part of your body. We can repair the hernia and close the tear surgically.

  • Gallbladder removal: The gallbladder is a small organ that stores bile, a liquid that helps with digestion. Our surgeons can remove a gallbladder that becomes infected or blocked with gallstones.
